Fantastic fundraising for YPWD from Brownies to Bicycles
What do a Brownie unit and eight cyclists have in common? Well they have both put themselves forward to raise funds for YPWD over the coming months.
Firstly the 7th Yateley Brownies Unit, from, yes, Yateley in Hampshire have selected YPWD as their charity of choice leading up to the Christmas break.
In response to this very generous decision the unit’s Brown Owl, Charlotte Haye, says that 'Girlguiding is, at its heart, all about teaching young girls their value in the world, and that they can really make a difference. This term our Brownie Unit decided to focus on how our group could make a positive impact and support the local community. We've been doing lots of activities around that theme, and the girls wanted to raise money for charity. So we gave them the chance to suggest charities they wanted to support and choose as a unit.’
Charlotte goes on to explain how YPWD came to be selected by the unit. ‘One of our Brownies dad's involved in the charity Younger People with Dementia, and she suggested the charity to the unit. Once she explained to the girls what they did and the work they do, the whole unit voted to support YPWD unanimously.’
Each of the girls from the unit has painted their own money box and they are using the money boxes to collect donations from family and friends. At the end of the fundraising all donations will be counted and the unit will match, pound for pound, what the girls have raised.
Charlotte goes on to say, ‘We're really excited to be supporting such a great charity and the work they do.'
We’re very grateful to 7th Yateley Brownies for their generous support and the charity will be visiting the unit early in December to engage the girls in some activities to help them to understand more about dementia and to answer questions that they may have.
Cycling a long way in August 2020
On August 16 2020 there will be a team of incredibly generous volunteers, putting themselves through the gruelling Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 ride all in aid of YPWD.
Celebrating the legacy for cycling created by the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 starts at 05:45 in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, then follows a 100-mile route on closed roads through the capital and into Surrey’s stunning countryside. With leg-testing climbs and a route made famous by the world’s best cyclists at the London 2012 Olympics, it's a truly spectacular event for all involved. The Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 finishes on The Mall in central London, shortly before 150 professional cyclists race in the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic on a similar route.
‘A challenge such as this ride attracts all manner of people, from those that cycle regularly to those who want to take on the challenge to get a good time, plus those who simply want to give it a go! Whatever the reason is we are very humbled to have eight volunteers signed up, it means a great deal to everyone at YPWD.’ Says Mark Hainy, Charity Director.
